Quick answer

VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS SERVICE CAMPAIGN: VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION (VECI) LABEL REPLACEMENT (SC222) - This bulletin has been revised to include additional information. New/revised sections of this bulletin are indicated by a black bar in the margin area. This bulletin provides information to replace the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label on some 2020MY Sportage (QL) vehicles with 2.0L T-GDI engines produced from December 19, 2018 through May 13, 2020. An incorrect VECI label was installed during production of these vehicles. The VECI label is extremely important when performing maintenance, emissions inspection, or ordering engine and engine management related parts. It also contains the code that tells a testing facility which test to perform to ensure the vehicle is tested to the correct emission standard. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board consider the under hood VECI label an integral part of state emission testing. If the VECI label is incorrect, the vehicle may fail the emission testing, even if it meets applicable emissions standards.

What this bulletin may mean before buying

Treat this as service research, not a verdict on one car. Before you buy, compare this communication with official recall campaigns, model-level owner complaint patterns, and the exact vehicle’s VIN-decoded specifications. A bulletin can help you ask a seller or dealer sharper questions about software updates, known repairs, warranty extensions and service history.
