Quick answer

Mercedes-Benz AG (MBAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has determined that the software for the engine control unit in the subject vehicles may not meet current specifications. As a result, the diagnosis for monitoring the air fuel ratio might not be activated in low load operation as intended. In addition, catalytic converter aging might not be immediately detected and so, may not illuminate a check engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). After a cold start in the "catalytic converter heating" operating mode, misfires might occur and the check engine MIL would be illuminated. Consequently, these issues may not meet local legal requirements for on-board diagnostics and/or exhaust gas emissions. MBUSA will conduct a voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign in which an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the software in the affected vehicles.

What this bulletin may mean before buying

Treat this as service research, not a verdict on one car. Before you buy, compare this communication with official recall campaigns, model-level owner complaint patterns, and the exact vehicle’s VIN-decoded specifications. A bulletin can help you ask a seller or dealer sharper questions about software updates, known repairs, warranty extensions and service history.
